DESCRIPTION:Join us on Earth Day at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of sketching. \nBrooklyn will be gaining many new trees – you can even request a tree to plant yourself! Following a big push to plant many more street trees in the neighborhood\, we will focus this month on landscapes\, especially how to represent trees in their surroundings. After an introductory slide presentation\, we’ll practice techniques with a few exercises\, each focusing on a different aspect of a landscape: trees\, waterways\, the sky\, and clouds. \nWe’ll discuss principles such as focal point\, atmospheric perspective\, simplification\, using space in a composition\, and the importance of planning. We will practice recognizing shapes and scale\, mark making\, using thumbnail sketches for composition and light\, and choosing colors. Tips on putting together an outdoor art kit for drawing\, watercolor\, or gouache for those who would like to paint and draw outdoors will also be touched upon. Bring your own travel art kit if you’d like to share what tools work best for you. \nThen we will create pieces using some of these skills. Weather permitting\, we might head outside to draw or paint together. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park for an afternoon of painting & cut paper collaging with local gardener\, artist & card designer Llubav. \nLlubav is a member of the Java Street Community Garden in Greenpoint\, a neighborhood of north Brooklyn\, NY. The plants from her plot and around the garden are often the subjects of many of her paintings and greeting cards. She is also inspired from her trips to other gardens like Wave Hill in NYC and her travels to the South West. \nShe will share her tips and techniques in creating her beautiful and whimsical designs. We will hand paint on different types of papers using a mix of tempera\, acrylic\, gouache\, watercolor\, crayons and colored pencils (or whatever else you might want to bring). SUMMARY:Celestial Watercolors: Painting the Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of painting with watercolors. \nAs the days start to get longer\, we still have plenty of opportunity to view the night sky which has fascinated people since the beginning of time. The ancients saw mythological beasts\, gods\, and goddesses; mariners once navigated using the constellations as their guide; and today we look to the future of humanity with space tourism and experiments with astrobotany. \nThere’ll be a short astronomy presentation to inform and inspire you for a fun afternoon of celestial watercolor painting. \nGuided projects include painting a sunset or the night sky with stars\, the Milkyway\, and nebulae in either a rectangular or one-point perspective (a circle). A third option will be a moon painting. \nSkills we’ll cover are wet in wet and wet on dry watercolor\, one-point perspective\, using liquid frisket (masking fluid)\, color layering\, and other watercolor basics. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an afternoon of book making utilizing collage\, writing or drawing. \nHear a short history about Bushwick Inlet\, once Bushwick Creek\, along the East River\, nowpart of Bushwick Inlet Park\, on the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. \nWe’ll start with a 20 minute slide show exploring some of its past\, including its connection to McCarren Park\, environmental changes\, its role in the Civil War\, and modern-day political battles and the environmental challenges ahead for our vulnerable waterfront. \nThen enjoy a guided art session on making a mini 8-page accordion book with an antique paper collage cover and filling it with your own story. Antique books to use for collage\, colored pencils and watercolors to decorate and fill your book are provided. Ideas on how to fill your book could include journaling\, poetry\, a short story\, illustration\, drawing\, collage or anything else you might imagine or want to incorporate into your design. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. DESCRIPTION:Join us to create a Phenology Wheel Artwork! \nAs we approach the winter solstice and the end of the year\, it is a great time to reflect on seasons and cycles. We will view examples of phenology wheels and discuss some local cycles in relation to our park\, from the evident flora and fauna changes to the more subtle such as the tides and aquatic life cycles. \nPhenology is the study of cycles or periodic events in nature. You’ll learn to set up a wheel and use it to create a visual record of different cycles such as moon phases\, weather\, temperature\, flower growth\, seasonal changes of leaves\, the tides\, bird migration\, animal life cycles\, or any other natural cycles and personal observations. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\npencil\ncolored pencils or watercolors\nruler\, compass\, and protractor\npaper appropriate for your pencils or watercolors\n\nThere will also be a template if you prefer to trace your wheel. Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once\, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone\, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions\, valves and connections. Ali has performed at the Museum of Art and Design\, the Caramoor American Roots Music Festival\, the American Folk Art Museum\, and the Brooklyn Folk Festival\, among other wonderful venues\, and was awarded the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2020. Ali is also the music director for local puppet troupe extraordinaire The Boxcutter Collective\, arranges music and sings with Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir\, and is part of a duet with the inimitable Feral Foster. DESCRIPTION:*** Due to adverse weather and park conditions this event has been canceled ***\nJoin Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a park clean-up at Bushwick Inlet Park on Saturday\, May 7\, for the 11th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, a day of service for the Hudson River and its tributaries. \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park at 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn NY. Meet up down by the water/gardens. There is street parking on Kent Ave but public transportation or biking is recommended. \nWe ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves and hand sanitizer. \nThis site is suitable for elementary-aged children with adult supervision. \n*IMPORTANT! To ensure the safety of volunteers\, Sweep Site Leaders\, park staff\, and our communities\, we ask that volunteers adhere to the following guidelines: \nVolunteers are required to pre-register for Sweep\, and bring their own masks\, gloves\, hand sanitizer\, and water.\nAll participants and Sweep Leaders must wear masks when folks from different households are closer than 3-6 ft from one another.\nSweep Leaders should maintain a distance of 15 feet and wear masks when providing announcements to volunteers.\nVolunteers should not participate if they have ANY signs of illness or if they have potentially been exposed to COVID-19 within the previous two weeks.\nQuestions?
