SUMMARY:Celestial Watercolors: Painting the Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of painting with watercolors. \nAs the days start to get longer\, we still have plenty of opportunity to view the night sky which has fascinated people since the beginning of time. The ancients saw mythological beasts\, gods\, and goddesses; mariners once navigated using the constellations as their guide; and today we look to the future of humanity with space tourism and experiments with astrobotany. \nThere’ll be a short astronomy presentation to inform and inspire you for a fun afternoon of celestial watercolor painting. \nGuided projects include painting a sunset or the night sky with stars\, the Milkyway\, and nebulae in either a rectangular or one-point perspective (a circle). A third option will be a moon painting. \nSkills we’ll cover are wet in wet and wet on dry watercolor\, one-point perspective\, using liquid frisket (masking fluid)\, color layering\, and other watercolor basics. Beginners to advanced welcome. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. Materials provided will include include paper\, watercolors\, colored pencils\, and other basic drawing supplies. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\nmultimedia or watercolor paper\nwatercolor paints\npencil\, eraser\, ruler\, tape (for masking edges)\ncolored pencils\, markers\, or pens\n\nNo experience necessary. \nInstructor Monica Schroeder is a professional scientific illustrator. Her work has appeared in Scientific American\, countless textbooks\, natural history museum exhibitions\, and on the TV Show Jeopardy. \nShe has been an adult art instructor since 2018. monbertkayak@gmail.com \n* Registration required. \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend. The class size is small to ensure an intimate hands on learning experience. \nChildren 14 and over (high school students) are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

SUMMARY:Create a Phenology Wheel Artwork
DESCRIPTION:Join us to create a Phenology Wheel Artwork! \nAs we approach the winter solstice and the end of the year\, it is a great time to reflect on seasons and cycles. We will view examples of phenology wheels and discuss some local cycles in relation to our park\, from the evident flora and fauna changes to the more subtle such as the tides and aquatic life cycles. \nPhenology is the study of cycles or periodic events in nature. You’ll learn to set up a wheel and use it to create a visual record of different cycles such as moon phases\, weather\, temperature\, flower growth\, seasonal changes of leaves\, the tides\, bird migration\, animal life cycles\, or any other natural cycles and personal observations. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\npencil\ncolored pencils or watercolors\nruler\, compass\, and protractor\npaper appropriate for your pencils or watercolors\n\nThere will also be a template if you prefer to trace your wheel. There will be a good amount of working time for feedback and tips and techniques. \nNo experience necessary. *Registration required. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend. The class size is small to ensure an intimate hands on learning experience. \nChildren 14 and over (high school students) are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

SUMMARY:Art Instruction: Cut Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom for an afternoon of painting & cut paper collaging with local gardener\, artist and card designer Llubav Choy Doerr.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe inspiration for this class is based on our local community gardens and parks and the plants that are found there. We will hand paint on different types of papers using a mix of tempera\, acrylic\, gouache\, watercolor\, crayons and colored pencils (or whatever else you might have on hand). Once we have created a mixture of colorful and textured raw materials\, we will then cut and make shapes which will be glued to a larger sheet of paper or cardstock to create a unique and playful collage. \nwww.llubav.com \n@llubav \nFlower Templates which could be printed will be included in the reminder email for those who prefer to follow along: creating your own imaginary garden or design is encouraged. \nDownload a template here. \nNo experience necessary. * Registration required. * \nSuggested Supplies: \n\nBrown paper bag\nMixed media paper 80-98 lb weight\nLight color construction paper\nScissors (comfortable size to cut small shapes)\nBig and medium sized brushes\nElmer’s liquid glue\, paste or glue stick\nColored Paints (Acrylic\, Guache\, Tempera\, Watercolor)\nColor pencils or Crayons\nBlue painters tape\nHairdryer\nA color palette tray\, plate or paper palette\n\n

SUMMARY:Decomposition 101 Mycology Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As a follow-up to his FBIP webinar\, mycology educator Luke Sarrantonio (web – IG) will lead us through a hands-on workshop to discuss and demonstrate fungi’s role as decomposers.   Learn how to introduce mushroom mycelium (basically roots of the mushroom) and their many benefits in a garden. The fungus can break down wood chips to release nutrients for plants and produce mushrooms for years to come instead of adding other fertilizers.  Fungi are key players in the cycle of life\, why not work with them? \nMeet by the gardens just beyond the soccer field. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, we will be under the canopy atop of the park building green roof. \nFree registration required.

SUMMARY:Fungi and Plants: An Essential Romance
DESCRIPTION:Fungi and plants are ideal life partners\, there is evidence that they may have even facilitated each other’s move onto land over a billion years ago. Fungi take in oxygen\, releasing carbon dioxide\, while breaking down rock and organic matter to release nutrients essential for plants to grow. Plants recycle the carbon dioxide\, releasing oxygen\, while photosynthesizing to produce carbon sugars which they share with fungi so that both plants and fungi can flourish. There are a multitude of interesting relationships\, each of which is unique. Join us with educator Luke Sarrantonio as we peel back the curtain and take a peek at these amazing organisms and the fascinating connections they rely on to survive and thrive. Also\, learn about ways we can facilitate these relationships to influence the health of the ecosystems that we live in and gardens that we tend to. \nLuke Sarrantonio (website – instagram) grew up in a small rural town in the upper Hudson Valley/Catskill Region (about 2 hours north of NYC) and spent much of his childhood exploring the fascinating interwoven ecosystems that make up this unique natural landscape. In college at SUNY ESF he was blessed to work under some truly inspiring minds in the world of Life Sciences and Mycology (study of fungi). Following his passion through travels in the Pacific Northwest and work on a shiitake farm in the finger lakes region of New York\, he eventually landed back in the Hudson Valley. Currently he is working to develop education programming and mushroom based products under the name Mycophilic: for the love of Fungi. \nThis will be a Zoom meeting. Free registration required.
