Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nThe Jazz Foundation of America presents Carol Sudhalter Quintet. \nFlautist and saxophonist Carol Sudhalter didn’t take up music until her third year of college (biology major)\, but hasn’t let up since. She was the first graduate of Smith College to become a professional jazz musician\, and in 1978 moved from Boston to New York City to join the all-women Latin band\, Latin Fever. In 1986 she founded the 13-piece Astoria Big Band\, and later founded several performance initiatives in Queens\, including the Athens Square Park Jazz Mondays series\, Astoria / LIC Waterfront Jazz Festival\, and Sunset Jazz Concerts in Ralph Demarco Park. Sudhalter has worked with many notable artists including Etta Jones\, Jimmy McGriff\, Sarah McLawler\, Henry Butler\, Chico Freeman\, Jimmy Cobb and Jason Marsalis. Soon after earning a degree in music education at Morgan State University\, he was offered the drum chair in Pockets\, a major funk group produced by Verdine and Maurice White from Earth\, Wind & Fire. His distinctive avant-garde jazz\, funk\, and soul stylings attract fellow musicians and the jazz community to his live appearances\, especially at the Williamsburg Music Center\, which he founded 42 years ago. Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext\, Jackson Lynch & Friends brings us Ali Dineen with Feral Foster. \nAli Dineen is a poet-composer born and raised in Queens\, whose lyrics are poetic and deeply personal\, and highlight the intersections between personal experience\, larger histories\, and systems of power. Ali has performed at the Museum of Art and Design\, the Caramoor American Roots Music Festival\, the American Folk Art Museum\, and the Brooklyn Folk Festival\, among other wonderful venues\, and was awarded the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2020. Ali is also the music director for local puppet troupe extraordinaire The Boxcutter Collective\, arranges music and sings with Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir\, and is part of a duet with the inimitable Feral Foster. At the age of 12\, he had the honor of playing with his cousin Duke Ellington\, and has since shared the stage with greats like Dizzy Gillespie\, Roy Haynes\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith\, touring Europe and the Caribbean. As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nFirst up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the Craig Holiday Haynes Quartet. \nAcclaimed drummer Craig Holiday Haynes\, the son of legendary drummer and three-time Grammy Award winner Roy Haynes\, brings his craft to Brooklyn. Named after Billie Holiday\, he started playing tenor sax at age 14 in and around NYC with a group called the Fabulous Uniques. Craig later studied African percussion with Chief Bey and seriously switched over to a drum set around his 20th birthday. He’s toured with R&B/ Disco artist “Gary Toms Empire”\, Sun Ra (with whom he’s also recorded) and has since played an assortment of great jazz\, blues\, R&B\, and most recently gospel with folks such as Barry Harris\, Clifford Jordan\, Freddie Hubbard\, Gloria Lynne\, Lionel Hampton\, Tony Bennett\, The Boys Choir of Harlem\, The Allman Brothers Band\, Leslie West\, Geri Allen\, Marcus Miller\, Gladys Knight\, Eddie Palmeri\, actor Danny Glover (to name a few) and many\, many others! \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series.
