Named after the Sylvia Rexach song “Alma Adentro” or “Inside of your soul” in English\, this group of musicians seeks to touch our hearts through music with Yazmín Morales-Vicente (vocals)\, William Vázquez (guitar)\, Luis Rodríguez (Cuatro) and Elías De Jesús (percussion). As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nNext up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the George Braith Quartet. \nGeorge Braith (born George Timothy Braithwaite on June 26\, 1939) is a soul-jazz saxophonist from New York. Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once\, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone\, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions\, valves and connections.Braith is featured in a mosaic in the 72nd street station of the Second Avenue Subway in the New York City Subway system. \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. Marine biologists from the Coastal Classroom will lead the community in workshops to discover and explore marine life at low tide on the Bushwick Inlet Park jetty. \nActivities will include a seining demonstration and organism identification\, marine food chains discussions\, water quality testing and talk about the human impacts to aquatic ecosystems in NYC. \nThe biologists will seine the shoreline for marine life. Participants 16 and older can assist them but must sign a waiver. \nFor participants not fully vaccinated a face covering is required. \nPlease join us! As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nFirst up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the Craig Holiday Haynes Quartet. \nAcclaimed drummer Craig Holiday Haynes\, the son of legendary drummer and three-time Grammy Award winner Roy Haynes\, brings his craft to Brooklyn. Named after Billie Holiday\, he started playing tenor sax at age 14 in and around NYC with a group called the Fabulous Uniques. Craig later studied African percussion with Chief Bey and seriously switched over to a drum set around his 20th birthday. He’s toured with R&B/ Disco artist “Gary Toms Empire”\, Sun Ra (with whom he’s also recorded) and has since played an assortment of great jazz\, blues\, R&B\, and most recently gospel with folks such as Barry Harris\, Clifford Jordan\, Freddie Hubbard\, Gloria Lynne\, Lionel Hampton\, Tony Bennett\, The Boys Choir of Harlem\, The Allman Brothers Band\, Leslie West\, Geri Allen\, Marcus Miller\, Gladys Knight\, Eddie Palmeri\, actor Danny Glover (to name a few) and many\, many others! \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. SUMMARY:Where's Our Park? Rally
DESCRIPTION:We are calling on the City of New York to create a funding plan for the entirety of Bushwick Inlet Park that will include line items in the coming fiscal year budget. \nIn 2016 Mayor de Blasio made history with his incredible rescue of the CitiStorage property from private sale. Since then all 27 acres of Bushwick Inlet Park lay in the taxpayers’ hands and 4 more acres are in development into usable park space. However\, no funds been budgeted towards developing the remaining two-thirds of the park. Meanwhile the Department of City Planning recently reported that North Brooklyn created the most new housing units in the entire city. 20\,000 units! Thousands more are in development now. 16 years ago the City promised to create 27-acre Bushwick Inlet Park to help mitigate against this massive increase in neighborhood density\, for our health. But\, only 10 acres are in the works or open. This is all the while our district open space ratio is stuck at .6 acres per 1\,000 residents well below the city average of 1.8 acres. \nThe fiscal year 2022 budget is in the final stretch. We demand the City follow through on its commitment to fund the rest of the park. \nJoin us for a Where’s Our Park? Rally to amplify this demand. DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a cleanup and planting event at Bushwick Inlet Park on Saturday\, May 1\, 2021 for the 10th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, a day of service for the Hudson River and its tributaries (and New York Harbor). \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park\, 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn down by the water. We ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves\, and hand sanitizer. This site is suitable for elementary-aged children with proper adult supervision. \nRegistration required. \n*IMPORTANT! SUMMARY:Biology/Art: Local Flowers/Intro to Botanical Illustration
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park volunteers have planted several garden beds and continue to expand the beds to include more of the park. Crocuses were added last year as part of the city’s plant it purple initiative. Join us on Zoom to see and discuss some of the flowering plants soon to be seen in the gardens while demonstrating the basics of Botanical Illustration. \nMonica Schroeder\, a professional scientific Illustrator\, will lead us through plant anatomy and warm up drawing exercises and then dive into a simple botanical illustration. (A Crocus Template will be provided for those who wish to trace.) \nThe class will switch between slides and live instruction using pencils and watercolor. \nUse any medium you prefer that allows for detailed work – even just a plain pencil and copy paper. (Most drug stores sell colored pencils and watercolor kits for less then $10\, a great way to get started!) \nThe demo will be done using drawing pencils\, colored pencils\, watercolor pencils\, gouache\, and watercolor. \nAll skill levels welcome. \nSUGGESTED ART SUPPLIES: \n\n2H and a 2B pencil (any hard or soft pencils)\nWhite eraser & a kneaded eraser\nSketch pad or paper\nScrap paper\nPaper for your chosen medium such as watercolor paper or colored pencil paper\nWatercolors** colored pencils\, or gouache\nWatercolor round brushes: size 3/0\, size 1 & size 4\n\n**Most drug stores carry watercolor sets for less than $10\, although student or artist-grade have more brilliant colors. \nTo download a traceable or printable template and view inspirational images\, please visit Monica’s website and choose the crocus options. \nFree registration & Zoom link access below.

SUMMARY:Virtual Bushwick Inlet Wildlife: Sunset Silhouette
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the local wildlife around Bushwick Inlet and create fun artwork inspired by its creatures. \n\n\n\n\n\n* A Zoom link will be included in the registration confirmation. * \nFree registration required. \n20-minute slideshow and talk\, 40-minute relaxing art project suitable for beginners. \nWe’ll start at the top of the animal kingdom classification tree and make our way down to the tiny living creatures\, plankton\,  that are critical to not only animal life\, but to human life as well. \nTogether we’ll paint or draw a colorful sunset or underwater scene and layer the silhouette of an animal over it. \nParticipants will receive a pdf to print out and trace. Or\, draw your own animal silhouette. \nSUPPLIES: \n\nAny color medium\, such as watercolors\, pencils\, crayons\, or pastels.\nA black crayon\, pencil\, or oil pastel – anything that can go on top of your colors.\nPrinter paper\, watercolor paper\, or any art paper suitable for your medium.  8 x 10 as a minimum size suggested if using the printout.\nGraphite or chalk for the tracing.\nThe printout or your own drawing to trace.\n\n  \nYou’ll learn how to transfer artwork. The demonstration will use watercolors for the background and a black oil pastel for the silhouette. \n60 – 90 minutes. Please have art supplies ready. \n\n\n\n\n\nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture & talk about the Bushwick Inlet Park waterfront ecology & history\, followed by a guided art session to make an accordian book. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n* A Zoom link will be included in the registration confirmation. * \nFree registration required. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nWe’ll start with a 20 minute slideshow & talk about the Bushwick Inlet Park waterfront\, its creatures\, plants\, and history. \nThen enjoy a guided art session to make an accordion book. Fill it with art\, poetry\, a short story\, collage or anything you can imagine. \nArt supplies are those you might have at home or easy to get. \nART SUPPLIES TO HAVE AT HAND: \n\nA piece of drawing\, multimedia\, or watercolor paper. Or even printer paper. At least 16″ long would be good. Or we can glue a few sheets together\nA piece of cardboard to cut two book covers from. Delivery box\, food box\, anything stiff. At least 2″ x 4″ or larger.\nDecorative paper to use for both the covers\, a few inches larger than your cardboard. Old book pages\, magazine pages\, wrapping paper.\nA ruler\nA scissor\, exacto\, or cutter – any tool that will cut your cardboard\nPencil\nPaper glue\, glue stick\, or white crafting glue\n\nPaints\, colored pencils\, markers\, pens or collage materials\, Anything which you would like to fill your book \nNo experience necessary. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker.
