DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate being outdoors with an afternoon of in-person onsite sketching at Bushwick Inlet Park! \nWe will discuss the basics of a travel art supply kit\, framing & composition\, simplifying\, creating symbols\, using color\, and more. After a 15 minute lesson\, we’ll move to different spots within the park and draw thumbnail sketches before settling on a longer and larger sketch. \nThe workshop will be led by art instructor and scientific illustrator Monica Schroeder. \nFree. DESCRIPTION:This Summer FBIP brings music to the beautiful waterfront in Bushwick Inlet Park with our first Summer Music in BIP series. As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nFirst up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the Craig Holiday Haynes Quartet. \nAcclaimed drummer Craig Holiday Haynes\, the son of legendary drummer and three-time Grammy Award winner Roy Haynes\, brings his craft to Brooklyn. Named after Billie Holiday\, he started playing tenor sax at age 14 in and around NYC with a group called the Fabulous Uniques. Craig later studied African percussion with Chief Bey and seriously switched over to a drum set around his 20th birthday. He’s toured with R&B/ Disco artist “Gary Toms Empire”\, Sun Ra (with whom he’s also recorded) and has since played an assortment of great jazz\, blues\, R&B\, and most recently gospel with folks such as Barry Harris\, Clifford Jordan\, Freddie Hubbard\, Gloria Lynne\, Lionel Hampton\, Tony Bennett\, The Boys Choir of Harlem\, The Allman Brothers Band\, Leslie West\, Geri Allen\, Marcus Miller\, Gladys Knight\, Eddie Palmeri\, actor Danny Glover (to name a few) and many\, many others! \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. DESCRIPTION:As a follow-up to his FBIP webinar\, mycology educator Luke Sarrantonio (web – IG) will lead us through a hands-on workshop to discuss and demonstrate fungi’s role as decomposers.   Learn how to introduce mushroom mycelium (basically roots of the mushroom) and their many benefits in a garden. The fungus can break down wood chips to release nutrients for plants and produce mushrooms for years to come instead of adding other fertilizers.  Fungi are key players in the cycle of life\, why not work with them? \nMeet by the gardens just beyond the soccer field. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, we will be under the canopy atop of the park building green roof. \nFree registration required.

SUMMARY:Where's Our Park? Rally
DESCRIPTION:We are calling on the City of New York to create a funding plan for the entirety of Bushwick Inlet Park that will include line items in the coming fiscal year budget. \nIn 2016 Mayor de Blasio made history with his incredible rescue of the CitiStorage property from private sale. Since then all 27 acres of Bushwick Inlet Park lay in the taxpayers’ hands and 4 more acres are in development into usable park space. However\, no funds been budgeted towards developing the remaining two-thirds of the park. Meanwhile the Department of City Planning recently reported that North Brooklyn created the most new housing units in the entire city. 20\,000 units! Thousands more are in development now. 16 years ago the City promised to create 27-acre Bushwick Inlet Park to help mitigate against this massive increase in neighborhood density\, for our health. But\, only 10 acres are in the works or open. This is all the while our district open space ratio is stuck at .6 acres per 1\,000 residents well below the city average of 1.8 acres. \nThe fiscal year 2022 budget is in the final stretch. We demand the City follow through on its commitment to fund the rest of the park. \nJoin us for a Where’s Our Park? Rally to amplify this demand. DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a cleanup and planting event at Bushwick Inlet Park on Saturday\, May 1\, 2021 for the 10th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, a day of service for the Hudson River and its tributaries (and New York Harbor). \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park\, 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn down by the water. We ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves\, and hand sanitizer. This site is suitable for elementary-aged children with proper adult supervision. \nRegistration required. \n*IMPORTANT! DESCRIPTION:Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park volunteers have planted several garden beds and continue to expand the beds to include more of the park. Crocuses were added last year as part of the city’s plant it purple initiative. Join us on Zoom to see and discuss some of the flowering plants soon to be seen in the gardens while demonstrating the basics of Botanical Illustration. \nMonica Schroeder\, a professional scientific Illustrator\, will lead us through plant anatomy and warm up drawing exercises and then dive into a simple botanical illustration. (A Crocus Template will be provided for those who wish to trace.) \nThe class will switch between slides and live instruction using pencils and watercolor. \nUse any medium you prefer that allows for detailed work – even just a plain pencil and copy paper. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the local wildlife around Bushwick Inlet and create fun artwork inspired by its creatures. \n\n\n\n\n\n* A Zoom link will be included in the registration confirmation. * \nFree registration required. \n20-minute slideshow and talk\, 40-minute relaxing art project suitable for beginners. \nWe’ll start at the top of the animal kingdom classification tree and make our way down to the tiny living creatures\, plankton\,  that are critical to not only animal life\, but to human life as well. \nTogether we’ll paint or draw a colorful sunset or underwater scene and layer the silhouette of an animal over it. \nParticipants will receive a pdf to print out and trace. Or\, draw your own animal silhouette. \nSUPPLIES: \n\nAny color medium\, such as watercolors\, pencils\, crayons\, or pastels.\nA black crayon\, pencil\, or oil pastel – anything that can go on top of your colors.\nPrinter paper\, watercolor paper\, or any art paper suitable for your medium.  8 x 10 as a minimum size suggested if using the printout.\nGraphite or chalk for the tracing.\nThe printout or your own drawing to trace.\n\n  \nYou’ll learn how to transfer artwork. DESCRIPTION:Come garden with us! \nWe are happy to announce that we are prepared to start up volunteer events on a scaled back basis with limited numbers of volunteers. Throughout the seasons we usually have many ways to get involved with BIP but with COVID-19 we have had to curtail our programing. We have been working with the Parks Dept to establish safe re-opening protocols and equipment. \nTo keep us all safe during COVID-19\, this gardening activity is limited to 15 volunteers per the Parks Dept. DESCRIPTION:NYC Parks invites you to submit your work for exhibition in the gallery at the NYC Park and Recreation building at Bushwick Inlet Park. \nParks is proud to be New York City’s greenest agency. The LEED Platinum building at Bushwick Inlet Park was designed with sustainability in mind and features a range of green building solutions. Parks is committed to advancing sustainability practices in park design and asks artists to share their interpretation of what it means to be sustainable. We ask artists to submit works for inclusion in the gallery space at Bushwick Inlet Park that draws on their experiences in NYC Parks in Greenpoint and Williamsburg\, on the rich culture of activism and sustainability surrounding parkland in these neighborhoods. \nNote that this call for submissions is for display within the building interior but strong submissions that include public art for display within the outdoor space at Bushwick Inlet Park will be considered as well. SUMMARY:Biology/Art Instruction - Wildlife of Bushwick Inlet: Watercolor & Oil Pastel
DESCRIPTION:Bushwick Inlet is a small waterfront area along the East River just north of Bushwick Inlet Park. Despite its small size\, it is home to a surprising number and diversity of birds\, mammals\, crustaceans\, fish\, and much more. \nThrough a 15-minute slide show we’ll explore some of its natural wonder\, following the food chain of wildlife down to beautiful and mysterious plankton. \nThis is followed by a brief tutorial on using watercolors and oil pastels. \nYou’ll have two relaxing hours to create your own artwork design or follow a guided art project. \nNo experience necessary. \nMaterials include watercolor\, 9″ x 12″paper\, oil pastels\, a transfer to trace. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker. monbertkayak@gmail.com \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nRegistration required. \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend.
