DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a cleanup\, planting\, and tree service project at Bushwick Inlet Park on Saturday\, October 17\, 2020 for the 9th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, a day of service for the Hudson River. \nVolunteers will meet at the gardens in Bushwick Inlet Park\, where street parking will be available. We ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves and hand sanitizer. This site is suitable for elementary-aged children with proper adult supervision. \n*IMPORTANT! To ensure the safety of volunteers\, Sweep Site Leaders\, park staff\, and our communities\, we ask that volunteers adhere to the following guidelines: \n\nVolunteers are required to pre-register for Sweep\, and bring their own masks\, gloves\, hand sanitizer\, and water.\nAll participants and Sweep Leaders must wear masks that fully cover both their nose and mouth\, at all times\, no exceptions.\nAll volunteers must maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet and wear masks at all times. When announcements are being made\, a distance of 15 feet should be maintained.\nVolunteers should carpool only with members of their own household.\nVolunteers should not participate if they have ANY signs of illness or if they have potentially been exposed to COVID-19 within the previous two weeks.\n\n  \nRequired registration. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Celebrate City of Water Day with Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park! Marine biologists from the Coastal Classroom will lead the community in workshops to discover and explore marine life at low tide on the Bushwick Inlet Park jetty. Participants will be learning about the ecosystems and wildlife living along the shoreline of the East River\, resiliency\, and restoration of original habitat. \nThe biologists will seine the shoreline for marine life. Participants 16 and older can assist them but must sign a waiver. \nWe will be practicing strict social distancing. Groups of 10 people at a time will be working with the scientists. \nA face covering is required for each person. \nPlease join us! The LEED Platinum building at Bushwick Inlet Park was designed with sustainability in mind and features a range of green building solutions. Parks is committed to advancing sustainability practices in park design and asks artists to share their interpretation of what it means to be sustainable. We ask artists to submit works for inclusion in the gallery space at Bushwick Inlet Park that draws on their experiences in NYC Parks in Greenpoint and Williamsburg\, on the rich culture of activism and sustainability surrounding parkland in these neighborhoods. \nNote that this call for submissions is for display within the building interior but strong submissions that include public art for display within the outdoor space at Bushwick Inlet Park will be considered as well. DESCRIPTION:Bushwick Inlet is a small waterfront area along the East River just north of Bushwick Inlet Park. Despite its small size\, it is home to a surprising number and diversity of birds\, mammals\, crustaceans\, fish\, and much more. \nThrough a 15-minute slide show we’ll explore some of its natural wonder\, following the food chain of wildlife down to beautiful and mysterious plankton. \nThis is followed by a brief tutorial on using watercolors and oil pastels. \nYou’ll have two relaxing hours to create your own artwork design or follow a guided art project. \nNo experience necessary. \nMaterials include watercolor\, 9″ x 12″paper\, oil pastels\, a transfer to trace. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker. monbertkayak@gmail.com \nLight refreshments will be provided. \nRegistration required. \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend. DESCRIPTION:Oysters played a big role in the history and ecology of New York City including Bushwick Inlet and its environs. We almost lost our oyster population\, but they are now making a major comeback and helping to clean up our waterways. \nScientific illustrator Monica Schroeder will guide us through a talk about this subject and and then follow this up with a hands on intro watercolor painting session.  \nWe’ll start with a 30 minute slide show about these fascinating bivalve mollusks\, and then follow that up with a 30 minute intro to watercolors: materials\, mark-making practice\, basics of color theory and color mixing exercises. Then you’ll have 2 hours to paint your own creation. \nNo painting experience required. \nAll materials are supplied as well as light refreshments. \nRegistration required. \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend. DESCRIPTION:From Greenpoint Williamsburg Youth Soccer League: \nThis is a memorial celebration and tribute to Seamus Wood.   Everyone is invited! \nFYI\, it’s BYO CLEMENTINES (Seamus loved orange foods!) & WATER BALLOONS (pre-filled) & BIKES (there’ll be a slow bike “race”). \nFor those who didn’t know Seamus\, he had finished 3rd Grade at PS84 last year (2018) just days before falling violently ill while on vacation with his family.  At this point last year\, the cause of Seamus’ death had not been determined.  Seamus’ family has since learned and shared the following explanation: “Seamus’ intestine twisted around his bowel cutting off the circulation. His bowel became gangrenous. The gangrene caused sepsis which triggered a massive organ failure — heart\, liver\, kidney\, brain. In Seamus lingo\, an epic fail. All happening in 20 hours during which it looked like a stomach flu.” \nSeamus was a gifted athlete and a bright and charming boy who lit up everyone around him.  Even if you didn’t have the pleasure of knowing him\, please join in the festivities at BIP on Saturday and celebrate the joyous spirit of Seamus.

DESCRIPTION:* The threat of rain has forced cancellation of this performance. *\nJoin us for the Hip to Hip Theatre Group production\, for all ages*\, of Shakespeare’s Richard III! \nHip to Hip is dedicated to stimulating and developing interest in the theatre arts in underserved communities by providing free\, family-friendly\, professional productions of popular classics\, and free theatre workshops for children\, in public spaces. \nAll performances are free to the public and will feature an interactive kids workshop 30 minutes before showtime. Kids & the Classics is designed for ages 4 to 12 and gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters\, situations\, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and reading of text. \n* Kids & the Classics\, interactive workshops begin at 7pm. The play begins at 7:30pm. \nAudience members are encouraged to bring a blanket or low chair\, picnic fare and enjoy a Shakespeare play in the open air. No tickets are necessary. Performances run 95 minutes. \nRichard III\nAfter a long civil war\, England enjoys a period of peace under King Edward. But Edward’s younger brother Richard\, who helped him to the throne\, grows restless in the shadows. Shakespeare’s searing drama chronicles the bloody rise and fall of the last English king to die on the battlefield. \nArtistic Director Jason Marr: “Both as a producer and as an actor\, Richard III has hovered near the top of my “yet-to-do list” for years. It’s never made the cut\, because on some level the play doesn’t quite sing for me. After thirteen years with Hip to Hip\, and with my “yet-to-do list” getting shorter and shorter\, it seemed time to take another look at Richard III.” \n“I came across the fascinating documentary\, The King in the Car Park\, which tracks the exhumation and reburial of the remains of Richard III\, which culminated in 2012. With the discovery of Richard III’s remains\, we now know that Shakespeare’s portrait of Richard’s deformity is grossly exaggerated. The exhumed skeleton reveals Richard had severe scoliosis\, but it bears no suggestion that he was a hunchback with a withered arm and unequally sized legs. Hip to Hip’s new radical adaptation of Richard III attempts to bridge the divide between the real man and the caricature the Tudors\, aided and abetted by Shakespeare\, perpetuated.” \nThe repertory cast includes Leah Alfieri\, Kendall Devin Bell\, Katie Fanning*\, Rebecca Wei Hsieh\, Kurt Kingsley*\, Tristan Land\, Jason Marr*\, Joy Marr*\, Josh Miccio\, Austin Nguyen\, Anuj Parikh\, Sophia Parola\, Patrick Singer and Colin Wulff*. \n*appears courtesy of Actors Equity Association
