SUMMARY:Drawing & Painting from Photo References: Focus on Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intro to sketching and painting birds from images while learning about some of our local avian species. \nDrawing from life is often considered the ideal\, but capturing ever changing landscapes and moving subjects—especially birds—can be incredibly challenging. \nSketching and painting from photo references could sharpen your life drawing and nature journaling practice and be a fun way to create art from your own photos. \nCameras can oversaturate\, increase contrast and auto sharpen a color image; we will make our images our own by cropping\, editing and recreating lost colors and atmosphere. \nWe will introduce some of our local birds and discuss their unique characteristics and anatomy. We will then explain some of the tools artists have used for centuries\, such as Claude glass\, comparator mirror\, or camera lucida and then move on to transfer methods\, including the grid\, graphite transfer\, and device apps. Required registration. \nJoin us for a brief exploration of Bushwick Inlet and the namesake park’s rich history and a creative art session inspired by its story. This area along the East River\, bordering Greenpoint and Williamsburg\, Brooklyn\, has a fascinating past. \nAfter an introductory slideshow presentation covering this area’s land use history\, evolution and environmental transformations\, we will discuss the challenges facing our modern-day waterfront and follow a guided session to create a mini 8-page accordion book with a paper collage cover which can be filled with your unique story\, collage or art. Different techniques and tips will be demonstrated for inspiration – whether you prefer journaling\, poetry\, illustration\, drawing\, or collage\, the possibilities are endless! \nArt supplies will be provided by Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park\, including antique book pages\, watercolors\, colored pencils\, glue\, and more. His distinctive avant-garde jazz\, funk\, and soul stylings attract fellow musicians and the jazz community to his live appearances\, especially at the Williamsburg Music Center\, which he founded 42 years ago. Public transit: Take the L to Bedford and then B32 bus. \nRegistration is required. \nWe recommend all Sweep volunteers to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, insect repellent\, work gloves and hand sanitizer. \nThis site is suitable for elementary-aged children with adult supervision. \n*IMPORTANT! DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of painting with watercolors. \n“Environmental Science + Art” FBIP 2024 Saturday class series: \nWe will consider the upcoming eclipse\, how light from urban buildings affects birds and other animals\, the value of a park as a bird safe haven and the effects of satellites circling the planet. \nAs the days start to get longer\, we still have plenty of opportunities to view the night sky which has fascinated people since the beginning of time. The ancients saw mythological beasts\, gods\, and goddesses; mariners once navigated using the constellations as their guide; and today we continue to explore and understand further and further into space and our expanding impact. \nThere’ll be a short astronomy presentation to inform and inspire you for a fun afternoon of celestial watercolor painting. \nWe will have some guidance as to how to depict the night sky with stars\, galaxies and nebulae. \nSkills we’ll cover are wet in wet and wet on dry watercolor\, color layering\, and other watercolor basics. Beginners to advanced welcome. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. Materials provided will include paper\, watercolors\, colored pencils\, and other basic drawing supplies. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\nmultimedia or watercolor paper\nwatercolor paints\npencil\, eraser\, ruler\, tape (for masking edges)\ncolored pencils\, markers\, or pens\n\nNo experience necessary. \nInstructor Monica Schroeder is a professional scientific illustrator. Required registration. \nHear a short history of Bushwick Inlet\, once Bushwick Creek\, now part of Bushwick Inlet Park\, along the East River on the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. \nWe’ll start with a 20 minute slideshow exploring aspects of its past\, including its connection to McCarren Park\, environmental changes\, its role in the Civil War\, and modern-day design and environmental challenges ahead for our vulnerable waterfront. \nThen enjoy a guided art session on making a mini 8-page accordion book with an antique paper collage cover and filling it with your own story. Antique books to use for collage\, colored pencils and watercolors to decorate and fill your book will be provided. Ideas on how to fill your book could include journaling\, poetry\, a short story\, illustration\, drawing\, collage or anything else you might imagine or want to incorporate into your design. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. We welcome you to take part in the 12th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, our annual day of service for the Hudson River and its tributaries. \nJoin Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a park clean-up at Bushwick Inlet Park \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park\, 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn NY\, at the Bushwick Inlet Park Building. There is street parking but it is easier to arrive by bike\, public transit or ferry! \nRegistration is required. \nWe ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves and hand sanitizer. \nThis site is not suitable for elementary-aged children. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Drawing Landscapes: Pencil\, Ink\, Watercolor & Gouache - Techniques & Tips
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Earth Day at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of sketching. \nBrooklyn will be gaining many new trees – you can even request a tree to plant yourself! Following a big push to plant many more street trees in the neighborhood\, we will focus this month on landscapes\, especially how to represent trees in their surroundings. After an introductory slide presentation\, we’ll practice techniques with a few exercises\, each focusing on a different aspect of a landscape: trees\, waterways\, the sky\, and clouds. \nWe’ll discuss principles such as focal point\, atmospheric perspective\, simplification\, using space in a composition\, and the importance of planning. We will practice recognizing shapes and scale\, mark making\, using thumbnail sketches for composition and light\, and choosing colors. Tips on putting together an outdoor art kit for drawing\, watercolor\, or gouache for those who would like to paint and draw outdoors will also be touched upon. Bring your own travel art kit if you’d like to share what tools work best for you. \nThen we will create pieces using some of these skills. Weather permitting\, we might head outside to draw or paint together. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. SUMMARY:Celestial Watercolors: Painting the Night Sky
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Bushwick Inlet Park Community Center for an afternoon of painting with watercolors. \nAs the days start to get longer\, we still have plenty of opportunity to view the night sky which has fascinated people since the beginning of time. The ancients saw mythological beasts\, gods\, and goddesses; mariners once navigated using the constellations as their guide; and today we look to the future of humanity with space tourism and experiments with astrobotany. \nThere’ll be a short astronomy presentation to inform and inspire you for a fun afternoon of celestial watercolor painting. \nGuided projects include painting a sunset or the night sky with stars\, the Milkyway\, and nebulae in either a rectangular or one-point perspective (a circle). A third option will be a moon painting. \nSkills we’ll cover are wet in wet and wet on dry watercolor\, one-point perspective\, using liquid frisket (masking fluid)\, color layering\, and other watercolor basics.
