SUMMARY:Bushwick Inlet Story: Accordion Bookmaking and Collage Class
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an afternoon of book making utilizing collage\, writing or drawing. \nHear a short history about Bushwick Inlet\, once Bushwick Creek\, along the East River\, nowpart of Bushwick Inlet Park\, on the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. \nWe’ll start with a 20 minute slide show exploring some of its past\, including its connection to McCarren Park\, environmental changes\, its role in the Civil War\, and modern-day political battles and the environmental challenges ahead for our vulnerable waterfront. \nThen enjoy a guided art session on making a mini 8-page accordion book with an antique paper collage cover and filling it with your own story. Antique books to use for collage\, colored pencils and watercolors to decorate and fill your book are provided. Ideas on how to fill your book could include journaling\, poetry\, a short story\, illustration\, drawing\, collage or anything else you might imagine or want to incorporate into your design. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. Materials provided will include include paper\, cardboard book cover\, antique books to use for collage\, watercolors\, colored pencils\, glue\, and other art materials. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\nA piece of drawing\, multimedia\, or watercolor paper (at least 16″ long)\,\nA piece of cardboard to cut two book covers from. Delivery box\, food box\, anything stiff. DESCRIPTION:Join us to create a Phenology Wheel Artwork! \nAs we approach the winter solstice and the end of the year\, it is a great time to reflect on seasons and cycles. We will view examples of phenology wheels and discuss some local cycles in relation to our park\, from the evident flora and fauna changes to the more subtle such as the tides and aquatic life cycles. \nPhenology is the study of cycles or periodic events in nature. You’ll learn to set up a wheel and use it to create a visual record of different cycles such as moon phases\, weather\, temperature\, flower growth\, seasonal changes of leaves\, the tides\, bird migration\, animal life cycles\, or any other natural cycles and personal observations. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\npencil\ncolored pencils or watercolors\nruler\, compass\, and protractor\npaper appropriate for your pencils or watercolors\n\nThere will also be a template if you prefer to trace your wheel. The synergy of call and response singing\, drumming and dance provide the foundation for a dynamic interplay between the solo drummer and dancer. BombaYo stirs the soul in a way that only music and dance can to uplift and celebrate our deeper humanity. Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the George Braith Quartet. \nGeorge Braith (born George Timothy Braithwaite on June 26\, 1939) is a soul-jazz saxophonist from New York. Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once\, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone\, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions\, valves and connections. Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext\, Jackson Lynch & Friends brings us Ali Dineen with Feral Foster. \nAli Dineen is a poet-composer born and raised in Queens\, whose lyrics are poetic and deeply personal\, and highlight the intersections between personal experience\, larger histories\, and systems of power. Ali has performed at the Museum of Art and Design\, the Caramoor American Roots Music Festival\, the American Folk Art Museum\, and the Brooklyn Folk Festival\, among other wonderful venues\, and was awarded the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2020. Ali is also the music director for local puppet troupe extraordinaire The Boxcutter Collective\, arranges music and sings with Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir\, and is part of a duet with the inimitable Feral Foster. Bring some food\, find a great spot\, and enjoy the show! \nJoe Papp in Five Acts (2012\, Directors Tracie Holder\, Karen Thorsen) tells the story of this indomitable\, feisty\, street-wise champion of the arts. As founder of The Public Theater\, Free Shakespeare in the Park and producer of groundbreaking plays like Hair\, A Chorus Line and for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf\, Papp believed great art was for everyone\, not just a privileged few. A cultural change agent for more than fifty years\, Papp’s stages held up a mirror to society with work that reflected the reality of people’s lives. \nPapp worked to expand public access to the arts. “We have public libraries\,” he would argue\, “Why not public theaters?” He recognized the role artists could play in building a more democratic\, inclusive society. At a time when theatre was largely the domain of white men\, he was convinced that women\, LGBTQIA+\, BIPOC and other marginalized communities\, denied power elsewhere in society\, could develop it on the stage. His goal was a “theater of inclusion” on-stage\, backstage\, and in the audience. \nFeaturing rare footage from the 50s to Papp’s death in 1991\, and up-close scenes from the performances themselves\, Joe Papp in Five Acts tells his own story without narration. His great accomplishments and his own\, often tumultuous\, personal history is told by the artists he helped create—and\, in some cases\, tried to destroy—including actors Kevin Kline\, James Earl Jones\, Meryl Streep\, Olympia Dukakis\, Mandy Patinkin\, Martin Sheen\, Christopher Walken and playwrights Larry Kramer\, and David Hare among others. \n***Directors Tracie Holder and Karen Thorsen will introduce the film.

Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext\, the Jazz Foundation of America brings us Alvin Flythe and the Flythetime. \nQueens native Alvin Wink Flythe started playing music at the age of six and has been a professional saxophonist for more than 50 years. At the age of 12\, he had the honor of playing with his cousin Duke Ellington\, and has since shared the stage with greats like Dizzy Gillespie\, Roy Haynes\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith\, touring Europe and the Caribbean.
