The synergy of call and response singing\, drumming and dance provide the foundation for a dynamic interplay between the solo drummer and dancer. BombaYo stirs the soul in a way that only music and dance can to uplift and celebrate our deeper humanity. Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the George Braith Quartet. \nGeorge Braith (born George Timothy Braithwaite on June 26\, 1939) is a soul-jazz saxophonist from New York. Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once\, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone\, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions\, valves and connections. Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext\, Jackson Lynch & Friends brings us Ali Dineen with Feral Foster. \nAli Dineen is a poet-composer born and raised in Queens\, whose lyrics are poetic and deeply personal\, and highlight the intersections between personal experience\, larger histories\, and systems of power. Ali has performed at the Museum of Art and Design\, the Caramoor American Roots Music Festival\, the American Folk Art Museum\, and the Brooklyn Folk Festival\, among other wonderful venues\, and was awarded the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2020. Ali is also the music director for local puppet troupe extraordinaire The Boxcutter Collective\, arranges music and sings with Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir\, and is part of a duet with the inimitable Feral Foster. DESCRIPTION:Through Movies Under the Stars\, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and NYC Parks bring more than 150 film screenings to parks throughout the five boroughs. Enjoy family-friendly entertainment in the city’s parks and playgrounds\, ranging from great new movies to all-time classics. Our movies have chairs reserved for seniors and people with disabilities\, so that everyone can enjoy a good movie. Bring some food\, find a great spot\, and enjoy the show! \nJoe Papp in Five Acts (2012\, Directors Tracie Holder\, Karen Thorsen) tells the story of this indomitable\, feisty\, street-wise champion of the arts. As founder of The Public Theater\, Free Shakespeare in the Park and producer of groundbreaking plays like Hair\, A Chorus Line and for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf\, Papp believed great art was for everyone\, not just a privileged few. A cultural change agent for more than fifty years\, Papp’s stages held up a mirror to society with work that reflected the reality of people’s lives. \nPapp worked to expand public access to the arts. “We have public libraries\,” he would argue\, “Why not public theaters?” He recognized the role artists could play in building a more democratic\, inclusive society. At a time when theatre was largely the domain of white men\, he was convinced that women\, LGBTQIA+\, BIPOC and other marginalized communities\, denied power elsewhere in society\, could develop it on the stage. His goal was a “theater of inclusion” on-stage\, backstage\, and in the audience. \nFeaturing rare footage from the 50s to Papp’s death in 1991\, and up-close scenes from the performances themselves\, Joe Papp in Five Acts tells his own story without narration. His great accomplishments and his own\, often tumultuous\, personal history is told by the artists he helped create—and\, in some cases\, tried to destroy—including actors Kevin Kline\, James Earl Jones\, Meryl Streep\, Olympia Dukakis\, Mandy Patinkin\, Martin Sheen\, Christopher Walken and playwrights Larry Kramer\, and David Hare among others. \n***Directors Tracie Holder and Karen Thorsen will introduce the film.

At the age of 12\, he had the honor of playing with his cousin Duke Ellington\, and has since shared the stage with greats like Dizzy Gillespie\, Roy Haynes\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith\, touring Europe and the Caribbean. Named after the Sylvia Rexach song “Alma Adentro” or “Inside of your soul” in English\, this group of musicians seeks to touch our hearts through music with Yazmín Morales-Vicente (vocals)\, William Vázquez (guitar)\, Luis Rodríguez (Cuatro) and Elías De Jesús (percussion). DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park for a major planting and park clean-up at Bushwick Inlet Park. This is a makeup day for Riverkeeper Sweep that was canceled. \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park at 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn NY\, by the water/gardens. \nWe ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves and hand sanitizer. \nThis site is suitable for elementary-aged children with adult supervision. \nRegistration is required.

DESCRIPTION:*** Due to adverse weather and park conditions this event has been canceled ***\nJoin Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a park clean-up at Bushwick Inlet Park on Saturday\, May 7\, for the 11th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, a day of service for the Hudson River and its tributaries. \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park at 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn NY. Meet up down by the water/gardens. There is street parking on Kent Ave but public transportation or biking is recommended. \nWe ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves and hand sanitizer. \nThis site is suitable for elementary-aged children with adult supervision. \n*IMPORTANT! To ensure the safety of volunteers\, Sweep Site Leaders\, park staff\, and our communities\, we ask that volunteers adhere to the following guidelines: \nVolunteers are required to pre-register for Sweep\, and bring their own masks\, gloves\, hand sanitizer\, and water.\nAll participants and Sweep Leaders must wear masks when folks from different households are closer than 3-6 ft from one another.\nSweep Leaders should maintain a distance of 15 feet and wear masks when providing announcements to volunteers.\nVolunteers should not participate if they have ANY signs of illness or if they have potentially been exposed to COVID-19 within the previous two weeks.\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Intro to Nature Journaling - Part Two - Trees - Techniques and Tips
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park on Zoom (again!) for an afternoon of science and art instruction with Monica! \nBushwick Inlet Park is a perfect place for Nature Journaling with its oasis of trees\, gardens\, and open spaces along the scenic East River. All you need is paper\, a pencil or pen and a desire to observe and record nature – all skill levels welcomed! \nFollowing a 15-minute presentation that will introduce basic tree identification tips\, species found in Bushwick Inlet Park\, city trees – history\, facts\, and ecology\, we’ll continue our exploration of Nature Journaling by delving into the basics of drawing trees. We’ll look at tree shapes and the details of bark\, leaves\, flowers\, and branches. We will discuss drawing trees throughout the seasons using pencil\, ink\, and watercolor. Have a tree – real or photo reference – ready to inspire you. \nMinimum supplies: \n\nPaper and pencil.\nOptional: Colored Pencil\, Markers\, pen & ink or a small watercolor kit.\n\nNo experience is necessary. \nRegistration required. \nPart 3 (Landscapes) and field trips are planned for later in the year for those of you who might be able to join in person – please watch for more information. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker. \nmonbertkayak@gmail.com
