DESCRIPTION:*** Due to adverse weather and park conditions this event has been canceled ***\nJoin Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a park clean-up at Bushwick Inlet Park on Saturday\, May 7\, for the 11th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, a day of service for the Hudson River and its tributaries. \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park at 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn NY. Meet up down by the water/gardens. There is street parking on Kent Ave but public transportation or biking is recommended. \nWe ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves and hand sanitizer. \nThis site is suitable for elementary-aged children with adult supervision. \n*IMPORTANT! To ensure the safety of volunteers\, Sweep Site Leaders\, park staff\, and our communities\, we ask that volunteers adhere to the following guidelines: \nVolunteers are required to pre-register for Sweep\, and bring their own masks\, gloves\, hand sanitizer\, and water.\nAll participants and Sweep Leaders must wear masks when folks from different households are closer than 3-6 ft from one another.\nSweep Leaders should maintain a distance of 15 feet and wear masks when providing announcements to volunteers.\nVolunteers should not participate if they have ANY signs of illness or if they have potentially been exposed to COVID-19 within the previous two weeks.\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park on Zoom (again!) for an afternoon of science and art instruction with Monica! \nBushwick Inlet Park is a perfect place for Nature Journaling with its oasis of trees\, gardens\, and open spaces along the scenic East River. All you need is paper\, a pencil or pen and a desire to observe and record nature – all skill levels welcomed! \nFollowing a 15-minute presentation that will introduce basic tree identification tips\, species found in Bushwick Inlet Park\, city trees – history\, facts\, and ecology\, we’ll continue our exploration of Nature Journaling by delving into the basics of drawing trees. We’ll look at tree shapes and the details of bark\, leaves\, flowers\, and branches. We will discuss drawing trees throughout the seasons using pencil\, ink\, and watercolor. DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park on Zoom (again!) for an afternoon of science and art instruction! \nSo many beautiful creatures live in Bushwick Inlet. Birds\, fish\, oysters and so much more. Their life cycle\, and ours\, begins with microscopic\, magical plankton. They form the basis of the food chain\, providing 50% of our oxygen\, and are drifting in our local waterways by the thousands.  \nFollowing a 20-minute presentation\, we will create a drawing using the resist method\, first drawing with oil pastels or crayons\, then layering with watercolor and adding final details with additional drawing. \nA pdf of a coccolithophore outline is available to download\, print and trace or draw along to create a fanciful jellyfish. DESCRIPTION:Please join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and our partners from the North Brooklyn Community Boathouse\, Greenpoint Monitor Museum\, Billion Oyster Project\, and New York Harbor School for the fall survey of our oyster restoration project in Bushwick Inlet. \nThanks to generous support from City Parks Foundation and the NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund we have three new docks in the water\, and a dozen new oyster cages – for a total of four docks and sixteen cages – so we have plenty to do. \nSpaces are limited and registration is required. Wear old clothes and plan to get a little dirty!

As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nNext\, the Jazz Foundation of America brings us Alvin Flythe. \nQueens native Alvin Wink Flythe started playing music at the age of six and has been a professional saxophonist for more than 50 years. At the age of 12\, he had the honor of playing with his cousin Duke Ellington\, and has since shared the stage with greats like Dizzy Gillespie\, Roy Haynes\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith\, touring Europe and the Caribbean. Flythe’s style is influenced by John Coltrane\, Dexter Gordon\, Sonny Rollins\, and Sonny Stitt\, and combines a funk aesthetic with classic jazz tones. \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once\, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone\, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions\, valves and connections.Braith is featured in a mosaic in the 72nd street station of the Second Avenue Subway in the New York City Subway system. \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. DESCRIPTION:This Summer FBIP brings music to the beautiful waterfront in Bushwick Inlet Park with our first Summer Music in BIP series. As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nNext up up in partnership with El Puente CADRE we welcome BombaYo! \nBombaYo ignites the ancestral rhythms of Bomba\, an African derived music and dance tradition developed in Puerto Rico. The synergy of call and response singing\, drumming and dance provide the foundation for a dynamic interplay between the solo drummer and dancer. BombaYo stirs the soul in a way that only music and dance can to uplift and celebrate our deeper humanity. BombaYo creates an intergenerational and participatory experience that honors people of all ages and abilities. \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. We thank New York City Parks & Recreation\, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and North Brooklyn Parks Alliance for their support as well. \nPlease join us!

SUMMARY:City of Water Day 2021 - Shoreline Marine Life Discovery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate City of Water Day with Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park! Marine biologists from the Coastal Classroom will lead the community in workshops to discover and explore marine life at low tide on the Bushwick Inlet Park jetty. \nActivities will include a seining demonstration and organism identification\, marine food chains discussions\, water quality testing and talk about the human impacts to aquatic ecosystems in NYC. \nThe biologists will seine the shoreline for marine life. Participants 16 and older can assist them but must sign a waiver. \nFor participants not fully vaccinated a face covering is required. \nPlease join us! Sign up here. \nEnter the park at 86 Kent Ave near N 9th Street and then find us near the riverfront. \n
