As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nNext\, the Jazz Foundation of America brings us Alvin Flythe. \nQueens native Alvin Wink Flythe started playing music at the age of six and has been a professional saxophonist for more than 50 years. At the age of 12\, he had the honor of playing with his cousin Duke Ellington\, and has since shared the stage with greats like Dizzy Gillespie\, Roy Haynes\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith\, touring Europe and the Caribbean. Flythe’s style is influenced by John Coltrane\, Dexter Gordon\, Sonny Rollins\, and Sonny Stitt\, and combines a funk aesthetic with classic jazz tones. \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. Named after the Sylvia Rexach song “Alma Adentro” or “Inside of your soul” in English\, this group of musicians seeks to touch our hearts through music with Yazmín Morales-Vicente (vocals)\, William Vázquez (guitar)\, Luis Rodríguez (Cuatro) and Elías De Jesús (percussion). As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nNext up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the George Braith Quartet. \nGeorge Braith (born George Timothy Braithwaite on June 26\, 1939) is a soul-jazz saxophonist from New York. Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once\, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone\, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions\, valves and connections.Braith is featured in a mosaic in the 72nd street station of the Second Avenue Subway in the New York City Subway system. \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate City of Water Day with Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park! Marine biologists from the Coastal Classroom will lead the community in workshops to discover and explore marine life at low tide on the Bushwick Inlet Park jetty. \nActivities will include a seining demonstration and organism identification\, marine food chains discussions\, water quality testing and talk about the human impacts to aquatic ecosystems in NYC. \nThe biologists will seine the shoreline for marine life. Participants 16 and older can assist them but must sign a waiver. \nFor participants not fully vaccinated a face covering is required. \nPlease join us! DESCRIPTION:This Summer FBIP brings music to the beautiful waterfront in Bushwick Inlet Park with our first Summer Music in BIP series. As life is starting to look much brighter come take in a skyline river sunset on the shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes. \nFirst up in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America we welcome the Craig Holiday Haynes Quartet. \nAcclaimed drummer Craig Holiday Haynes\, the son of legendary drummer and three-time Grammy Award winner Roy Haynes\, brings his craft to Brooklyn. Named after Billie Holiday\, he started playing tenor sax at age 14 in and around NYC with a group called the Fabulous Uniques. Craig later studied African percussion with Chief Bey and seriously switched over to a drum set around his 20th birthday. He’s toured with R&B/ Disco artist “Gary Toms Empire”\, Sun Ra (with whom he’s also recorded) and has since played an assortment of great jazz\, blues\, R&B\, and most recently gospel with folks such as Barry Harris\, Clifford Jordan\, Freddie Hubbard\, Gloria Lynne\, Lionel Hampton\, Tony Bennett\, The Boys Choir of Harlem\, The Allman Brothers Band\, Leslie West\, Geri Allen\, Marcus Miller\, Gladys Knight\, Eddie Palmeri\, actor Danny Glover (to name a few) and many\, many others! \nA big thanks goes out to NYC Ferry for their support of this series. DESCRIPTION:As a follow-up to his FBIP webinar\, mycology educator Luke Sarrantonio (web – IG) will lead us through a hands-on workshop to discuss and demonstrate fungi’s role as decomposers.   Learn how to introduce mushroom mycelium (basically roots of the mushroom) and their many benefits in a garden. The fungus can break down wood chips to release nutrients for plants and produce mushrooms for years to come instead of adding other fertilizers.  Fungi are key players in the cycle of life\, why not work with them? \nMeet by the gardens just beyond the soccer field. \nIn the event of inclement weather\, we will be under the canopy atop of the park building green roof. \nFree registration required.

SUMMARY:Where's Our Park? Rally
DESCRIPTION:We are calling on the City of New York to create a funding plan for the entirety of Bushwick Inlet Park that will include line items in the coming fiscal year budget. \nIn 2016 Mayor de Blasio made history with his incredible rescue of the CitiStorage property from private sale. Since then all 27 acres of Bushwick Inlet Park lay in the taxpayers’ hands and 4 more acres are in development into usable park space. However\, no funds been budgeted towards developing the remaining two-thirds of the park. Meanwhile the Department of City Planning recently reported that North Brooklyn created the most new housing units in the entire city. 20\,000 units! Thousands more are in development now. 16 years ago the City promised to create 27-acre Bushwick Inlet Park to help mitigate against this massive increase in neighborhood density\, for our health. But\, only 10 acres are in the works or open. This is all the while our district open space ratio is stuck at .6 acres per 1\,000 residents well below the city average of 1.8 acres. \nThe fiscal year 2022 budget is in the final stretch. We demand the City follow through on its commitment to fund the rest of the park. \nJoin us for a Where’s Our Park? Rally to amplify this demand. SUMMARY:Fungi and Plants: An Essential Romance
DESCRIPTION:Fungi and plants are ideal life partners\, there is evidence that they may have even facilitated each other’s move onto land over a billion years ago. Fungi take in oxygen\, releasing carbon dioxide\, while breaking down rock and organic matter to release nutrients essential for plants to grow. Plants recycle the carbon dioxide\, releasing oxygen\, while photosynthesizing to produce carbon sugars which they share with fungi so that both plants and fungi can flourish. There are a multitude of interesting relationships\, each of which is unique. Join us with educator Luke Sarrantonio as we peel back the curtain and take a peek at these amazing organisms and the fascinating connections they rely on to survive and thrive. Also\, learn about ways we can facilitate these relationships to influence the health of the ecosystems that we live in and gardens that we tend to. \nLuke Sarrantonio (website – instagram) grew up in a small rural town in the upper Hudson Valley/Catskill Region (about 2 hours north of NYC) and spent much of his childhood exploring the fascinating interwoven ecosystems that make up this unique natural landscape. In college at SUNY ESF he was blessed to work under some truly inspiring minds in the world of Life Sciences and Mycology (study of fungi). Following his passion through travels in the Pacific Northwest and work on a shiitake farm in the finger lakes region of New York\, he eventually landed back in the Hudson Valley. Currently he is working to develop education programming and mushroom based products under the name Mycophilic: for the love of Fungi. \nThis will be a Zoom meeting. Free registration required.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park and Riverkeeper for a cleanup and planting event at Bushwick Inlet Park on Saturday\, May 1\, 2021 for the 10th Annual Riverkeeper Sweep\, a day of service for the Hudson River and its tributaries (and New York Harbor). \nVolunteers will meet at Bushwick Inlet Park\, 86 Kent Ave\, Brooklyn down by the water. We ask all Sweep volunteers to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, clothing that they can get dirty\, and to bring a hat\, sunscreen\, a full reusable water bottle\, and a face mask\, work gloves\, and hand sanitizer. This site is suitable for elementary-aged children with proper adult supervision. \nRegistration required. \n*IMPORTANT! To ensure the safety of volunteers\, Sweep Site Leaders\, park staff\, and our communities\, we ask that volunteers adhere to the following guidelines: \n\nVolunteers are required to pre-register for Sweep\, and bring their own masks\, gloves\, hand sanitizer\, and water.\nAll participants and Sweep Leaders must wear masks that fully cover both their nose and mouth\, at all times\, no exceptions.\nAll volunteers must maintain a minimum distance of 6 feet and wear masks at all times.\nWhen announcements are being made\, a distance of 15 feet should be maintained.\nVolunteers should carpool only with members of their own household.\nVolunteers should not participate if they have ANY signs of illness or if they have potentially been exposed to COVID-19 within the previous two weeks.\n\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:It’s not an animal and it’s not a plant – it’s a fungus! \nLed by scientific illustrator Monica Schroeder we’ll discover the weird world of fungi with an informational slideshow and a step by step art demonstration for all to follow and create a fun\, colorful artwork.  No experience necessary!. \nWe’ll choose between a chanterelle or an amanita muscaria (toadstool) for the demo.  Use any medium you prefer that allows for detailed work.  The demo will use pencil\, colored pencils and an ink pen or marker.  Topics and techniques covered will include light and shadow\, creating a 3-D form\, color theory\, mixing color for shadows\, inking a drawing\, and more. \nAll skill levels welcome.
