SUMMARY:Bushwick Inlet Story: Accordion Bookmaking and Collage Class
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an afternoon of book making utilizing collage\, writing or drawing. \nHear a short history about Bushwick Inlet\, once Bushwick Creek\, along the East River\, nowpart of Bushwick Inlet Park\, on the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. \nWe’ll start with a 20 minute slide show exploring some of its past\, including its connection to McCarren Park\, environmental changes\, its role in the Civil War\, and modern-day political battles and the environmental challenges ahead for our vulnerable waterfront. \nThen enjoy a guided art session on making a mini 8-page accordion book with an antique paper collage cover and filling it with your own story. Antique books to use for collage\, colored pencils and watercolors to decorate and fill your book are provided. Ideas on how to fill your book could include journaling\, poetry\, a short story\, illustration\, drawing\, collage or anything else you might imagine or want to incorporate into your design. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. Materials provided will include include paper\, cardboard book cover\, antique books to use for collage\, watercolors\, colored pencils\, glue\, and other art materials. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\nA piece of drawing\, multimedia\, or watercolor paper (at least 16″ long)\,\nA piece of cardboard to cut two book covers from. Delivery box\, food box\, anything stiff. At least 2″ x 4″ or larger.\nDecorative paper for the covers Old book pages\, magazine pages\, wrapping paper.\nA ruler\nScissors\, exacto\, or cutter – any tool that will cut your cardboard\nPencil\nPaper glue\, glue stick\, or white crafting glue\nPaints\, colored pencils\, markers\, or pens.\nOld book pages\, magazine pages\, wrapping paper.\n\nNo experience necessary. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator & kayaker. monbertkayak@gmail.com \nRegistration required. \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend. Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once\, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone\, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions\, valves and connections. DESCRIPTION:For the second summer FBIP brings music to the beautiful waterfront in Bushwick Inlet Park with our Summer Music in BIP 2022 series. Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext\, Jackson Lynch & Friends brings us Ali Dineen with Feral Foster. \nAli Dineen is a poet-composer born and raised in Queens\, whose lyrics are poetic and deeply personal\, and highlight the intersections between personal experience\, larger histories\, and systems of power. Ali has performed at the Museum of Art and Design\, the Caramoor American Roots Music Festival\, the American Folk Art Museum\, and the Brooklyn Folk Festival\, among other wonderful venues\, and was awarded the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2020. Ali is also the music director for local puppet troupe extraordinaire The Boxcutter Collective\, arranges music and sings with Reverend Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir\, and is part of a duet with the inimitable Feral Foster. Come take in a skyline river sunset on the 86 Kent shoreline esplanade while absorbing great musical vibes from multiple genres. \nNext\, the Jazz Foundation of America brings us Alvin Flythe and the Flythetime. \nQueens native Alvin Wink Flythe started playing music at the age of six and has been a professional saxophonist for more than 50 years. At the age of 12\, he had the honor of playing with his cousin Duke Ellington\, and has since shared the stage with greats like Dizzy Gillespie\, Roy Haynes\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith\, touring Europe and the Caribbean.
