SUMMARY:Watercolor Insects: Explore & Paint Insects From the Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore beneficial and invasive bugs from our gardens\, then paint them with watercolors. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\nBushwick Inlet Park\n86 Kent Avenue Community Building (Inside)\nBrooklyn\, NY 11249 \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInsects are everywhere—1.4 million for every person on Earth—yet many remain misunderstood. SUMMARY:Painted Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park for an afternoon of painting & cut paper collaging with local gardener\, artist & card designer Llubav. \nLlubav is a member of the Java Street Community Garden in Greenpoint\, a neighborhood of north Brooklyn\, NY. The plants from her plot and around the garden are often the subjects of many of her paintings and greeting cards. She is also inspired from her trips to other gardens like Wave Hill in NYC and her travels to the South West. \nShe will share her tips and techniques in creating her beautiful and whimsical designs. We will hand paint on different types of papers using a mix of tempera\, acrylic\, gouache\, watercolor\, crayons and colored pencils (or whatever else you might want to bring). Once we have created a mixture of colorful and textured raw materials\, we will then cut and make shapes which will be glued to a larger sheet of paper or cardstock to create a unique and playful collage. \nwww.llubav.com \n@llubav \nNo experience necessary. Registration required. \n*Meet inside the park building. \nSuggested Supplies: \n\nPaper or Tissue Paper you might want to use\nScissors (comfortable size to cut small shapes)\nBig and medium sized brushes\nElmers liquid glue\, paste or glue stick\nColored Paints (Acrylic\, Guache\, Tempera\, Watercolor)\n\nChildren 14 and over (high school students) are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n

SUMMARY:Create a Phenology Wheel Artwork
DESCRIPTION:Join us to create a Phenology Wheel Artwork! \nAs we approach the winter solstice and the end of the year\, it is a great time to reflect on seasons and cycles. We will view examples of phenology wheels and discuss some local cycles in relation to our park\, from the evident flora and fauna changes to the more subtle such as the tides and aquatic life cycles. \nPhenology is the study of cycles or periodic events in nature. You’ll learn to set up a wheel and use it to create a visual record of different cycles such as moon phases\, weather\, temperature\, flower growth\, seasonal changes of leaves\, the tides\, bird migration\, animal life cycles\, or any other natural cycles and personal observations. \nFriends of Bushwick Inlet Park will provide art supplies\, but feel free to bring your own (if you have!) for this guided art project for beginners and artists of all levels. \nIf you’d like to bring your own\, we recommend: \n\npencil\ncolored pencils or watercolors\nruler\, compass\, and protractor\npaper appropriate for your pencils or watercolors\n\nThere will also be a template if you prefer to trace your wheel. There will be a good amount of working time for feedback and tips and techniques. \nNo experience necessary. *Registration required. \nTaught by Monica Schroeder\, scientific illustrator \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend. The class size is small to ensure an intimate hands on learning experience. \nChildren 14 and over (high school students) are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

SUMMARY:Biology/Art Instruction: Oyster\, Watercolor Triptych
DESCRIPTION:Oysters played a big role in the history and ecology of New York City including Bushwick Inlet and its environs. We almost lost our oyster population\, but they are now making a major comeback and helping to clean up our waterways. \nScientific illustrator Monica Schroeder will guide us through a talk about this subject and and then follow this up with a hands on intro watercolor painting session. \nWe’ll start with a 30 minute slide show about these fascinating bivalve mollusks\, and then follow that up with a 30 minute intro to watercolors: materials\, mark-making practice\, basics of color theory and color mixing exercises. Then you’ll have 2 hours to paint your own creation. \nNo painting experience required. \nAll materials are supplied as well as light refreshments. \nRegistration required. \n* Please register only if you plan to actually attend. The class size is small to ensure an intimate hands on learning experience. \nChildren 14 and over (high school students) are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.

SUMMARY:Motiva Public Visioning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Design The Next Phase of Your Park!\nAnother section of Bushwick Inlet Park is moving forward with development into usable park space! Have your say in its use and design at the Public Visioning Session being held by NYC Parks & Recreation. Come share your ideas! We have waited so long. \nThursday January 24th\, 2019 – 6pm\nBushwick Inlet Park Building\n86 Kent Ave @ N 9th Street\nBrooklyn\, NY 11249 \nWant to learn more? Can’t make the meeting? Contact and send suggestions to BKspecialevents@parks.nyc.gov or call 718-965-6991. \nThis your opportunity to imagine & voice what this next important phase of Bushwick Inlet Park will be. Knock yourself out with creative\, unique park design ideas. The development of the Motiva site\, which encompasses the inlet itself\, is another step towards creating magnificent passive green space at Bushwick Inlet. \n \n  \nBushwick Inlet Park Design Guiding Principles to Consider \n\nBushwick Inlet Park should be a world-class park\, reflecting a 21st-century\, resilient design for the entire City.\nBushwick Inlet Park should adhere to an updated\, cohesive master plan for the entire 27 acres rather than a series of piecemeal\, stand-alone designs.\nThe 2007 master plan should remain the overall guide for the allocation of active and passive uses within the Park that will evolve through the scoping process.\n\n  \n4 essential things we learned from the Envisioning Bushwick Inlet Park series: \n\nDesign for Excellence! Bushwick Inlet Park should be the City’s next premier waterfront park. The opportunity here should not be squandered.\nDesign for the Community! Community involvement makes for the best design. Consider community diversity\, that parks are community spaces\, and encourage connectivity.\nDesign for Resiliency! Resiliency matters – we must design for sea level rise and storm surges.\nDesign Passive Spaces to be Engaging!  Simplicity can be powerful\, creating oases in the middle of the city
